USB 'Device cannot start' code 10 using NI-VISA driver wizard

I am using NI-VISA (4.1) driver wizard to create a .inf to allow me to talk on USB via LabWindows CVI to test products that we design/manufacture.

I have successfully done this on one of our products last year. I tried the same idea out on a new product (different USB hardware ),

and when I install the .inf file I get "This device cannot start. (Code 10)" on the pc's windows device manager viewer.

I have tried different pcs, tried downloading and using VISA 4.6, and tried several re-installs of the .inf and re-boots with exactly the same result.

There is no other software installed for this product, the VID and PID have not been seen before by the pc.

Can anyone suggest why the USB VISA driver method should work for one of our products but not another?

Hi Gidz,

The "Device cannot start" error can be caused by a few different things. The first that come to mind are that either the USB device is USB2.0 and the port you are plugging it in to is USB1.1, or that the device isn't receiving enough power. Check both of these, if the device isn't getting enough power consider using an external power supply as the port itself may not be providing enough to power the device.

The device works fine when we use a non-VISA .inf file, as supplied to our end customers, the pc recognises it then,

so I think that there can't be anything physically incompatible with the USB port or power requirement.

Hi Gidz,

Have a look at the following KnowledgeBase article and see if that is any help.

http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/websearch/E3A2C4FE42D7ED0D86256DB7005C65C9?opendocument&Submitted&&...

There is a link at the bottom of the page that links to a USB Instrument Control Tutorial which may also be useful.

Unfortunately I lack experience with this subject, hopefully someone with more experience will come across this thread and shine some light on your problem. I will continue to look into it some more and if I come across any useful information I will let you know.

Kind Regards,
