How do you pass strings through datasockets?

I'm using Labwindows 5.5 under WIN NT.
I can pass floats with no problem, but when I pass strings, I get either "Access is denied" or "The storage control blocks were destroyed" depending on different ways I've tried. Any ideas? Both my reader and writer are on my computer so the permissions shouldn't be the problem. Thanks.
