usb to serial adaptors

I'm looking for some LV compatible usb to serial adaptors. Can anyone recommend somebody they have dealt successfully with?

I use the NI USB-232 and USB-485 adapters.  I've used them with NI and several other programs from other vendors.   I have yet to find a piece of software they won't work with.  I've also had very good luck in past with adapters from Black Box.

Thanks guys. I've been having trouble with the ones our company has purchased in the past. It somehow ends up being some wierd combination of black majic to get them to work.

Just a word of caution. If your program has critical timing for your serial comms you may run into problems with USB-Serial adapters. Unfortunately, particularly with laptops, the motherboard serial port seems to have gone the way of 5 1/4" floppies (or even 3 1/2" ones!) Increasingly harder to support older systems. Also, as I have mentioned in other posts, the comm # that VISA uses will change dependent on which usb port your adapter is plugged into.

we are just doing general communication through the seial ports. However we have had problems with LV not recongizing the port.

I don't remember all the details, but I seem to recall a situation where the USB to Serial adapter was given a comm port number above 9 and LabVIEW wouldn't recognize the port configuration string. I'll try and dig back through some vi's and see if I can find the original problem (I tend to put comments about things like that on the diagram).

We use a comport card that give us an extra 8 serial ports and typically use port numbers higher than 9. We just seem to have bad luck with the usb to seial cards. Things like, there may be a box sent on a job with 5 adaptors in it. But for some reason, once you install a particular one to a laptop, it has to stay with that laptop. If you plug a different one into the laptop, it breaks the install. And other awkward problems.

I've had good luck with Belkin model# F5U409. They even have a VISTA beta
driver for it now.
