What you are doing is assigning a custom picture to the index 0 symbol, you are not inserting a symbol in the MCL (multi column listbox). Here is an example on how to insert a symbol in the MCL.

Everytime you update the MCL you will have to update these values.

Note that symbols values 0-40 are standard (the symbols available when you right click the MCL and select item symbols). I usually add custom symbols starting from index 41.

I tried inserting touch panel device png from ni example finder example setting custom symbols.vi but it is for tree. I thought the same will work for MCL. Is it not so?

Then how should I insert my customised picture as custom symbol of MCL?
