Make sure you choose correct settings for the serial communication, that is

Baud rate, Parity, Stop Bits, Flow control etc...!! so you want to check compatible settings in the user manual of third party hardware.

Next, you should definitely give a try with hyper terminal software before trying it with LabVIEW.
