problems in communicating with agilent 34970A

Did you read what error 420 is? The Read? by itself does not trigger the instrument to take a reading. Something you did prior to the first read did and you get those results. Subsequent commands get an error because there is nothing in the output buffer.

And why aren't you using the driver?

If I use the Driver, & use Voltage & other measurement VIs, during scanning I can't see the data on the Agilent front panel ( where as I can see the same while using READ? command). displaying values on the agilent front panel is critical for me.. moreover.. I can well acquired data for limited channels ( upto 4). Face problem if I have more channels to read...

I am using an Agilent 34970a and got it to start showing showing temperature data in labview using the hp34970a driver i got off the NI site and running the HP34970A EZ Temperature.VI. The problem is that each time a signal is sent to the Write Visa I can hear the Agilent instrument click, meaning a relay is switching internally. As the clicking noise is made, a quick message "MUX" is displayed on the front panel of the Agilent instument, but quickly disappears after appearing. Does anyone have experience with this instrument and understand my problem? I'm basically looking for a way to get rid of the clicking noise and simply read values from the instrument.

The clicking noise and "Mux" display is how it works.

There is really only one "meter" inside the 34970A and it is multiplexed (Mux) to 20 or 40 input channels (depending on what Mux card you have).

The clicking is the relay that corresponds to the channels you are reading closing to connect that input to the internal DMM.

Now if you are only going to ever read one channel you might be able to avoid the relay closure by using the lower level VI's (not the EZ ones).

You would first configure the function of channel you want to read, then do a single channel scan to read it.

Why don't you just download the 7.1 driver from the Instrument Driver Network?

The 3070A is an discontinued In Circuit Tester (ICT) system.  Sorry, but I doubt there are any LabVIEW drivers available for it.
