Jarod is the one who wrote the example you were pointed to. From the description, you should be able to do it but here's an 8.0 version.

Remember, you don't have to convert the ring to an enum. You are going to have to explain a bit more about what you need because your comments about converting to an array/cluster, etc. are confusing.
