No answers, yet, so how about an ugly way: don't USBTMC devices all respond to VISA Write "*IDN?"?

The instrument vendor defines their devices as USBTMC. The user (i.e. you) defines the device as USB RAW with the VISA wizard - often mistakenly and with little chance of making it work.
