Hi pingjockey,
If you can see your device in Measurement and Automation Explorer (MAX) you can locate your device and select it on the left-hand side of the screen under Remote Systems. You can then navigate to the lower tab called Controller Settings and select the checkbox for Console Out. You will then need to restart the device for the settings to take effect. You should then be able to read data from the COM port of the sbRIO using a terminal program (Hyperterminal, Putty, etc.). I have attached a screenshot illustrating where this checkbox is located. I hope this helps!

Thanks tannerite,
But thats the problem, MAX doesn't see the board.
I have checked and double checked the ISP addresses etc. And a different board of this same type has no communications problems. It appears that maybe the board itself is faulty, but I was hoping there was a work around.

Hi Pingjockey,
This KnowledgeBase goes through the different things to check when you're unable to see your RIO in MAX, http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/ABE4BC247E8AC9BC8625734E005CAB42?OpenDocument . It's a long list, but going through all those steps will cause a RIO to show up the vast majority of the time. I'll go ahead and tell you the first steps that fix most issues are dropping all firewalls and antivirus and connecting your RIO directly to your computer. I'd suggest making sure the subnet (the first 3 numbers of the IP address) of your RIO matches your PC subnet as well. Give that KnowledgeBase a look and let us know how things go.
Regards,
