If the items on the front panel are at relatively large distances from each other is there a way to bring them closer together? Is there some kind of measured grid that will suggest the relative locations of Front Panel items?

Starting with LabVIEW 8.0 I believe,  there is a Navigation Window Tool.  To find it on the front panel goto View>Navigation Window.  This will show you all your controls and indicators on the front panel.  What I do is find my controls or indicators I want to move,  highlight them and left click the mouse and drag them to the new location. 

If you dont have 8.0,  OpenG.org has a utility called Birds Eye View.
