does student version require activation

Does the student version require activation?
If so, do I send a copy of my student ID to National Instruments to
get activated?
I want to play with labview at home on my laptop but I dont have any
test equipment at home. What's the dirt cheapest USB or serial device
I can buy or build that will look like a piece of lab equipment to
labview?
Am I correct in assuming there is no student version for linux?

You can get all of the information about LabVIEW student edition on this page:

It does in fact have to be activated and all of the information necessary to activate it ships with the CD.  You may want to check with your school though and see if your school can provide you with LabVIEW for free.  If so, they can give you all of the information necessary to activate your software.
