does Labview 8 have autosave

I am wondering if LABview 8 has an autosave function?  If so where do I find it to turn it on and is the interval user configurable?  Thanks

Hello,

LabVIEW 8.0 does not have an auto-save feature built-in...perhaps we'll see this functionality in a future version?  For now, you could attempt to write your own primitive version of auto-save using VI Server.

Good luck,

-D

That is actually fairly simple to do using the VI class method Save Instrument and setting Save a Copy to True.

Thanks for the info.  I don't think it is worth the time to make one - I'll just have to remember to hit the save button more often ;)

The main problem with a VI Server-based autosave approach is that saving a VI in LabVIEW (even programmatically as a copy) has a few ill-effects.  Normally these things aren't a problem, but when the happen at random times in the middle of editing your VI, they can become quite annoying.

  • Any undo / redo history you had in that VI is gone after the save
  • If a control / indicator / label / free label has text focus, it will no longer have focus after the save
  • If any objects are selected, they will no longer be selected after the save

So it's very true that you could implement something pretty quickly that worked moderately well using VI Server, but you might not like using it in the end.  As Darren mentioned, we have considered that this could be a useful feature to be built-in to LabVIEW, perhaps you might see it one day in a future version.  🙂
