is it possible to ctrl + click multiple objects on a block diagram to select them? I have tried and it doesn't work. Seems like that is some common functionality that is missing. I will put it in the idea exchange, but I wanted to see if there was a solution already that I'm missing. Thanks.

Try Shift-click.

You use Shift+Click to select multiple objects.
