Perhaps I should have inquired about the feasibility of attaching an owner's handle to each star.

First of all, nobody here should be able to insult anyone, we're all professionals. A poor answer should not get any stars, but a reply pointing out the mistake while offering a better solution.

At the moment, the meaning of the stars is not officially defined, and unfortunately everybody cooks up his own interpretation, including you. 🙂
Minimally, we need a clear description on what the stars mean when we vote (as e.g. with any Restaurant review).

Yes, there is still a large number of users that use this board via the newsgroup and thus don't have access to the star rating system.

I agree that a reply pointing out the mistake is better than giving someone a poor rating.

I will research some other communities and their rating systems to get some other perspectives. I will let you know what I come up with and we can decide together which path is best for this community.

Just for an additiona data point, here's e.g. the star description for the weekly restaurant reviews in the LA times.

**** outsanding on every level
*** Excellent
** Very Good
* Good
No Star: Poor to satisfactory.

Of course in the case of the Developer Exchange, no star simply is a "missing value", and should not mean anything.
