Why is the start-up time 5 minutes for Version 8?

We installed LabVIEW 8 on 2 new PCs with Windows XP. On both machines the program needs 4 to 5 minutes to start. This is not acceptable.

For comparison. On my PC (2.4GHz XP SP2) it takes about 50 sec. to startup LV8. LV7 starts-up in 10 sec.

Thanks for all replies,

I talked to NI and they do not have an explanation yet. Here is a more precise information:

After program start it takes up to 3 minutes before the yellow start window appears which states

"LabVIEW 8 - Base development system".

After a total time of about 5 minutes the program finally starts with the browser window.

1st PC used is:

Hardware:

HP Workstation xw4200 with Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.40 GHz 1024 MB RAM

Software:

Windows XP SP1 Revision 5.1.2600

2nd PC used is:

Hardware:

Dell Precision Workstation 670 with Xeon™ CPU 3.40 GHz 1024 MB RAM

Software:

Windows XP SP1 Revision 5.1.2600

Best regards from Winni

Why are your new PC's only at XP SP1? SP2 has been out for quite a while now.

Have you looked at task manager to see what applications are using CPU during LV loading, in addition to memory usage.

Mine takes well under 10 seconds.

winni,
  • how is the speed the next time you start it (usually it takes a bit longer after a fresh reboot).
  • Is you installation local or on a network resource?
  • Is this a plain default install or did you add things to the palette?
  • what kind of hardware, DAQ drivers, etc. are installed?
  • What antivirus are you running? Have you tried if disabling it temporarily makes a difference?
  • What else is running on these PCs. Is it guaranteed virus-free?
  • Is the antivirus up-to-date?
  • Could it be you have spyware bloat?
  • I would recommend a scan with the free htMicrosoft AntiSpyware beta.
  • Is your HD nearly full and heavily defragmented?
  • Does you HD contain errors? Run scandisk with a full surface scan.
  • Are there any problems in the windows device manager? (e.g. do the HDs run in compatibility mode).

Hi all
Just for comparison: in my "poor man" PC - PIII 700 Mhz. 320 M ram running XP Pro SP2- after a fresh reboot, it takes about 2 minutes to start. Afterwards, it takes about 50 s. to restart in same session.

Antivirus anti-spyware and proxy are on.

cheers
Alipio
