What is the NI-XNET compatibility layer

I have a PCI-8511 card and the CanOpen Library and want to use the combination to develop a CanOpen application.

Looks like I need NI-XNET 1.1.1 and the Compatability Layer. I have been trying to understand about this compatabilty stuff. What excatly is that ??

It's a library that lets you use the older NI-CAN VIs with newer CAN hardware that is only supported by NI-XNET.  If the CanOpen library was written using the NI-CAN VIs, you will probably need the compatibility layer so that it can talk to your newer PCI-8511.  See "Migrating NI-CAN Applications to NI-XNET."
