Visa in Labview 6

Hi

Do applications (exe) written and built in LV6 still work with the VISA
installable which worked with LV5.1.1 applications. I just noticed that
all serial comms in LV6 are visa.

You do not HAVE to use VISA for serial communications in LabVIEW 6. Under Instrument I/O look for I/O Compatability->Serial Compatability. All of the old serial communications VIs are there. If I'm doing serial port communications, I use these. The machines that we have with HPIB cards in them have HP VISA loaded and LabVIEW serial VISA requires NI VISA. If I change the other computers to NI VISA, then the HPIB cards cease functioning. The serial I/O VIs work on all the computers without having to load NI VISA.

Just wanted to add a little to Rob's response. If you did want to use VISA, the VI's in 6 should work with the older version of VISA, though it is usually advisable to upgrade VISA. The 5.1.1 apps will work with the new version of VISA. Also, thought some might be interested to learn that you can use LabVIEW with HP-VISA or use NI-VISA with HP boards.
