I have a customer with an HMI at their plant, and they do not know anything about the history of the automation. I looked at the HMI, and I believe it is LabVIEW. How can I tell for sure. I looked at about, and all I get is the tags for the current panel.

I've always used the default "about" info for my applications. When I click help >> about... I see the following screen:

Capture.PNG

If this is on a Windows PC, you can look at the "add or remove programs" screen to see if any National Instruments software is installed.

If this is a custom built application, everything, including the "About" screen can be customized.

Is this on windows? (could be mac, linux, etc). What's the windows version? What is the creation date of the executable? What does it do? What other files/folder are in the exe location (e.g. is there a folder named "data").

While it might have been created using LabVIEW, it could be a commercial program that came with your instrument. Or it could have been locally developed. No way to tell. What's the name of the app? Did you do a google search?

Look for installed runtime engines. Can you post a screenshot of part of the front panel? How old is this app?
