USB DAQ Device Names??

Hi, I'm having quite a time here. I'm in a mfg situation where a test jig complete with a couple of internal USB DAQ (6008 and 6501) units are installed. I also have mulitple test stations.

When ever I connect a test jig, Windows USB enumerator goes out and finds "new" units and adds them. MAX calls them dev1...n. On each test station, I have to install and execute test code driving the test jigs but the I can't figure a way of nailing down the dev names, not can I figure out a method to determine any active devices.

For example:

1) install test Jig #1, which creates 2 DAQ (6008 & 6501) can calls them dev1&2
2) now remove Jig #1 and install Jig #2,  which creates 2 DAQ (6008 & 6501) can calls them dev3&4

All 4 show up under MAX although only the latter 2 are active. How can I determine this? I also would like to know which type of device Dev1..4 are and it depends upon the order that Windows enumerates them.

Is there a way to a) determine which DAQ are "connected" and their fundamental names (6008 or 6501)? I'm used to VISA but these devices don;t fit under VISA.
