Transfer files from PXI controller

I am trying to transfer files from a PXI controller to a laptop or disk storage device.  The controller is running Windows XP and I plugged my USB memory device into the controller and it was not mapped to a drive.  It poped up a dialog about not getting the best performace because another device was connected to the other USB port.  I was surprised that the USB drive was not recoginized because I have never had an issue wiht XP and my USB drive.

Other options I have is a portable hard disk or I could try FTP.  To transfer files using FTP can I connect my laptop directly to the PXI controller?  Do I need an Ethernet cross over cable?  Has anyone had issues with their USB drive on a controller running XP?

We have had no trouble with USB flash drives. If you are having trouble with a flash drive I would expect the same issues with a USB hard drive. Windows is like that sometimes and maybe you should try all the Windows help options.

There are a fairly large number of other options. You can set up a peer-to-peer network (which would require a crossover ethernet cable). I think there are sharing options through the serial port. You can get a USB wireless device and set up a network that way. All of these are a pain to varying degrees, but mostly because of Windows.

Do you think running a Windows update may fix the issue?  I would like the USB to work with memory device.  Any suggestions on settings or drivers?

Well I wouldn't EXPECT windows update to help but you never know. I assume you have already tried rebooting.

I am assuming that another USB device (mouse??) works OK. If not a mouse I would remove it. Then plug in the drive and check in device manager to see if it is at least noticed. You might want to try downloading the driver from the drive manufacturer and install (reinstall?) it. These are typical windows things to try. If it doesn't work you need to try google and/ or find a fairly sophisticated windows troubleshooter.

You need an ethernet crossover cable, or you can plug both computers into a
hub.

We use our PXI chassis with Labview RT, and disable the USB for
performance. There is an ftp server running on the RT side as part of the
standard installation, but I'm not sure if that's the case for a Windows
installation.
