Some instruments return just strings

Does anyone have a god general purpose code for conversion of strings to
numbers.
It should accept: e.g. the string -17.6e-4 and convert it to (real):
-1.7*10^(-3)

Use "Scan From String" that founds on String palette. Double click on it and edit format string parameter.

From the LabVIEW main screen, click on "Find Examples", search
for "strings". An "Extract Numbers.vi" should be there. It
may be overkill for what you want - just strip it down.
