Serial communication with PLC controller.

I'm trying to communicate with a PLC controller via a USB to RS232 adapter.  I don't have access to the controller so I'm trying to send ASCII commands back and forth between to computers.  If anyone has advise on what example programs I can configure/modify for this purpose I would appreciate it.  I've had moderate success with the continuous serial write and read.vi but I don't know how to send and receive only one command.

I've got the send message/intermittent instrument vi's working perfectly.  I should be able to build something with these no problem.
