I have some very old code (LV 4.0) I need to open in current LV, and I'm trying to get LV 8.2.1 installed on Windows 10. I know it's not currently supported, use at your own risk, etc etc but it just won't open at all. 8.2 wouldn't install, so NI Support got me the 8.2.1 installer, which DID install, but just fails silently when starting up. No splash screen, error messages, etc. I can't find any compatibility settings that make it work. If I click LabVIEW.exe, I get a busy cursor for a few seconds and then nothing.
I know I was able to do this a couple years ago on another computer using Windows 10. It seems that a Windows update has blocked me somehow.
Aside from installing Windows 7 (or older) in a VM, are there any tricks here I can use? (I tried checking Event Viewer for errors but couldn't find anything, and my antivirus software didn't show any alerts that I can find).
Solved! Go to Solution.

8.2.1 still works fine for me. But LabVIEW 4 did stop working sometime last year. I'm still running Windows 10 with whatever updates my IT pushes down on me.

Thanks, good data point. That means either my computer specifically is screwed up or I have some new Win10 update that's hosing me. Either way it sounds like an older VM or something is my best bet.
(Hopefully someone else could chime in with a specific update that breaks things so I don't have to guess and check!)

Is the 8.2.1 install just a means to an end so you can upconvert twice to get from 4.0 to 2020-ish?
I'll bet you can skip the install woes and just ask for help on the Version Conversion board. A colleague pretty recently got some help there to go from version 5 up to 2018.

Yes it is Kevin. I may have to do that but it's a ton of files and there may be confidentiality issues to work through, despite being 15+ year old code 🙂 I'll keep it in my back pocket though.

I'll throw out an offer to more privately upconvert for you instead of using the Version Conversion board. Send me a private message and we can work through details.
Disclaimer for everybody: THIS IS A UNIQUE OFFER. DO NOT SEND ME PMs ASKING FOR HELP. I NORMALLY IGNORE AND INSTANTLY DELETE PMs ASKING ME FOR HELP.

Small update (was out of town a while)- I installed 8.2.1 on a different Win10 machine and it worked fine to get the files updated, other than a couple that seem to be corrupted. I marked crossrulz' answer as a solution since the answer was... yes, it works just fine 🙂
And @crossrulz, thanks a ton for the kind offer to help me out here. I really appreciate it. Had my second computer failed to install as well I'd have taken you up on your offer, but I wanted to exhaust all of my options before asking you to convert a giant directory if mystery files for me. Your offer was way above and beyond, and I really appreciate it 🙂

Apropos of nothing here directly, but reading this thread reminded me that I've got a lovely LabVIEW 5.0 installation CD sitting on my desk at home in front of my Win10-x64-latest-build PC (but I still have an optical drive!), and I *still* need to go find me one of those Win95 virtual machine ISOs.
For no better reason than to take a trip down memory lane...
Glad you got your intermediate installation going, @Bert . And kudos to you, @crossrulz , for offering to help. I love this forum!

LabVIEW 4 actually worked for me today. It must have been LabVIEW 3 that stopped working for me earlier in the year.

Wait - LabVIEW 4 running under Win 10, natively? Like, with some compatibility settings invoked? If so, that's great - so what am I doing wrong where I can't get the installer for LV5.1 (I misquoted the version earlier) to run?
Or am I completely misunderstanding here?
