Do references opened in SubVIs close with the SubVI ("what happens in a SubVI stays in a SubVI")?

for instance, if I get references to all of the controls on the subVI's FP via a VI property node.

I don't know for sure actually. But, why not just close them and not have to wonder hope? The close reference function will take an array of references so it's not much extra code.
