Programatically setting check marks in the run time menu

Does anyone know how to programatically set a checkmark to the run time menu?  I have a sub menu setup where I want to choose an either/or selection option, and set the checkmark so the user knows what is selected.  I can handle the event selection, but can't find any way to interact back with the RT menu.  I've tried a number of things with the Menu VIs, but I can't get anything to work, not even reading my selected tags out of those VIs.  I assume I'm using the wrong reference or something.

Any help is appreciated.
