Production testing over modbus.

I need to setup a production tester with labview.  I have the developers suite.  I want to be able to communicate over modbus tcp as well as be able to have some misc digital and analog I/O.  What would be the best solution for both hardware and software?  Also, can Labview talk to modbus directly or do I need a hardware interface?
