Problem interfacing Serial port with USB on Win XP - Labview 6i

I'm having trouble interfacing the serial port on my device through the USB port on my laptop. I'm running Labview 6i on Win XP.
It works fine when i connect it to my PC, but that's running Win 2000. Is there something i'm missing with XP? Can anyone help?

Can you communicate using hyperterm in XP? What brand USB serial adapter are you using?

No, it couldn't communicate through Hyperterm either, so it's possible the problem could be my serial card on the device.

The USB adapter does work on another, but similar device with the PC, so the adapter is working properly. It did not work on the laptop, nor did the original device work on the PC. My remaining two hypotheses are either the Serial card is not working (leaning more torward this) or an issue with WinXP. Trying to isolate the problem by making sure it's not an OS thing!

Should the USB adapter work without any updates?

oh and the adapter is from Radioshack.

Thanks

oh and I also downloaded the below drivers (NI-Serial), but the diagnostic program couldn't detect anything. So, maybe it's my laptop!

Hi Vince,

The driver you downloaded from NI only applies to the NI USB-232 and USB-485 adapters, and it does not detect 3rd party hardware. Unfortunately I don't know whether the Radio Shack adapter will work without updates, so you may need to contact their tech support.

Since you can not get the hardware to work with comm programs outside of LabVIEW, it is pretty safe to rule that out of the equation. It really sounds like you have either a device configuration issue (baud rate, etc.), or a driver compatibility issue.

I agree with the suggestion of geting a driver update from the comapny that built yuor USB adapter.

I had a similar problem with LV 6i and a USB adapter.

I applied a driver update and updated to the latest (at the time) version of VISA (just for good measure) and the problem was solved.

Since your issue shows up without LV in the game, the VISA update is a non issue.
