Modbus Library

Hi, I downloaded the Modbus Library 8.2 Library onto Labview 8.5 platform.

Everything seemed to be installed  properly the only problem I have is that

when rebooting the system (Restart Windows XP) I see an error message on the

screen "Runtime Error, National Instruments\shared\tagger\tagserv.exe".

I'm concerned this can create problems! I believe it has something to do with the

modbus Library not being the 8.5 version

Hello there,

I am not sure if you are running any processes or shared variables.

In LaBVIEW, go to

Tools » Shared Variable » Variable Manager

Right click on Local System and click on Stop All processes.

Do you know when you started seeing this behavior? did you install anything before this error happened?

Hi Juan, the error happened only when I opened a VI and dropped a modbus VI, I was experimenting with the modbus Library on a windows PC with LabView 8.5.

Juan, do you know if this modbus Library will work in a  Scientific Linux ver. 5.0  computer running LabView 8.5?

Or do I have to download one for Linux?

One more question can the examples provided  for the TCP modbus in the library be applied to a real world application for example

communicating to a Bekhoff bx9000 controller? 

I'm new to modbus and LabView.

I tried reproducing the same behavior as in your case with a windows PC and LabVIEW 8.5 but I did not get the error message when restarting. I don't think that would be the problem since the ModBus library is only a library of Vis.

Regarding whether the library would work in Scientific Linux ver. 5.0, I am not sure if that platform is officially supported by LabVIEW but if you can run a normal vi, you should be able to run the ModBus Library.

The ModBus Library should work with a real world device however since National Instruments didn't develop it, it may have some device compatibility issues, but you could give it a try. If that does not work, you should use the ModBus I/O server when right clicking on My Computer in the project explorer.

Hi Juan, Why does NI supply the Library if they did not developed it?

Are you assuming I have the DSC module? I was not able to find the ModBus I/O server or am I doing

something wrong?

The Linux Scientific 5.0 is not on the list of supported distributions but some people are working with

some of you technical people as far as running LabView on it!

Hi JAMR,

As long as you are installing the ModBus library into the version of LabVIEW that you intend to use, it does not matter that it is not 8.5.  It is simply a collection of VIs that must be placed within the lib folder in order to be seen in LabVIEW. 

If you are runnning into any problems with it, it may be due to some small issues with trying to install LabVIEW on an unsupported distribution.  The error that you have mentioned seems related to shared variables, as indicated in the KnowledgeBase article Tagsrv.exe Error when Shutting Down.

As long as LabVIEW is operating correctly, there should not be any specific installation method for ModBus on Linux.  The ModBus library is simply a collection of LabVIEW VIs, so as long as the download places them in the correct lib folder, you should be able to use them without a problem.
