Limit String Control Length

Is there any way in Labview (5.1) to limit the
length of text that the user can enter in a
string control without wiring code in a loop?

I know I can wire a string length control, string
length and local variable to enforce the length
limit, but want to know if there is a simpler way
of doing this.
