God bless us! There are some super libraries of algorithms available that just aren't there in other languages. If you have some spare time, compare the fortran and c libraries at netlib.org (If you do any kind of signal processing or use numerical methods, and haven't heard of netlib, use this as an opportunity to check it out!)
I just bought a new compiler. Fortran isn't the same old beast anymore. Fortran 95 can use a pointer, is recursive, and doesn't have to be coded with lines started after column 6 (or was it 7?) anymore. File I/O is largely the same pain in the butt that it's always been.
