No problem. You can have many Labview versions installed.

Although if i remember correctly, it is preffered to be installed from older to newer version.

In your case, no problem

No, there should be no problems. I always have several LabVIEW versions installed (currently 8.0, 8.2, 8.5, 8.6).

You should make sure to keep the VIs sperate and keep backups, because once you save something in 8.5 you can no longer open it in 7.1.

(Things might be a bit more complicated if you have toolkits, addons, third party stuff, drivers, etc. but I don't have any experience with that.)

If you rely on toolkits etc. then I suggest different machines for each version. Although an effort is being made by NI to change the installers to not delete support for earlier versions, this is not a reality yet. If you have legacy apps that you need to support and can't tolerate the drivers that were used durring development being changed then again a unique machine or boot partition is called for.

Just trying to save you a lot of headaches,

You should also know what happens if you double-click a VI in internet explorer. You may wonder how windows decides which LabVIEW version to use.

  • If one LabVIEW version is already running, it will be used.
  • If LabVIEW is currently not running, it will use the version you used last.
  • If both version are already running, it will use the one you opened last, I think.
  • ...

So, anyway, if for example you have 7.1 open and doubleclick on a VI saved in 8.5, you'll get an error even though you also have LabVIEW 8.5 installed.

There was also the LabVIEW Version Chooser, but it seems the web site either got hacked or is otherwise broken. I don't know the current status.
