IRQ conflicts

I have a laptop with one comms serial port. I added another external serial port with a USB to SERIAL converter but it is causing my computer to crash due to IRQ conflicts. any ideas on how to fix this issue? it is showing up as unknow device under device manager.

Sounds more like a driver problem than an IRQ problem.

Install the drivers, then reconnect the device.  Might need to use the "Update Drivers" wizard in device manager after if it still shows up as "unknown device".

Curious, but what brand/model USB-Serial converter?  I've used quite a few varieties... some work better than others but i've never had an IRQ problem.

I installled the driver that came with the device on a CD. It said it was installed correctly. I used Update driver wizard in device manager. Someone suggested it may be a IRQ conflict. I searched online and read about it  and it seems  to be doing the same things that an IRQ conflict said it would do. Freeze up my computer / crash it. and have the yellow  ! point in Device manager. I could be wrong though.

I had a similar problem and I suspect my problem is with the drivers or some problem between LabVIEW and the drivers.  In summary, this is still a mystery to me.  I ran the same software on two other computers with no problems and with the same USB device.  Other software on the same computer didn't crash the computer when used for days but it crashed about twice a day with my LV program (a build).  Are the two USB to serial devices the same?  My problem computer is an XP computer with SP1 or 2 (sorry I'm not at work).  My software was a build from code that had recently been updated from LV 8.2.1 to LV 2011 and that scenario is also a suspect for me because another recently-upgraded build caused a crash.

I recommend getting a completely different USB device.  Maybe you could get one with a few ports like http://www.serialgear.com/4-Port-Serial-USB-USBG-4X2FTDI.html but note that I have no experience with this device.  I ended up getting an http://www.pcmall.com//p/product~dpno~7872452~pdp.fgedghd#activeTab=pdpOverview and I also used a different computer.
