How to clear a reference?

I have a program which runs different .vi's depending on the connected hardware. I have a variable that holds a reference to the last used .vi... My problem is how to clear such a reference manually -- so that I get "not a refnum/NaN" if I try using it?

I see that the "Close Reference" function does it. However, I still find it unlogical. Why can't there be a constant that I can use in an assignment?

Another Q: Is there any way to check whether or not a .vi is running?
