How can I use a commercial capnometer and pulse oximeter with labview

I am trying to design a program in MatLab which takes readings from a capnometer and a pulse oximeter and manipulates it in some way. I assume I need to buy some sort of module or microcontroller to which I can connect the two sensors. Is there a specific module I need to get, or a particular sensor type? I was wanting to buy commercially available sensors rather than building my own. Wireless is fine if it is easy, but wired is just as good. Any help in this area would be appreciated.

First of all, your subject line says LabVIEW but your message body says Matlab. Two different programs and you should know which one you are planning to use.

Second, as far as I know, you are trying to interface to devices and not directly to a sensor. If you are really going to connect to some device, you need to make sure it has some sort of pc interface. This could be RS-232, USB, Ethernet, etc.

We have done just what you are talking about with one of these:

We used the oxilink, has a RS-232 interface.  Succesfully with both MATLAB (need the instrument toolbox) and LV.

Sorry for any confusion. It is LabView we are trying to connect the sensors to not MatLab. The BCI® Digital  Power Oximeter Board seems like an exciting solution.  It appears I will also have to purchase the Sidestream Capnograph Module to get CO2 readings. Is this correct??? Is special software required to connect to LabView?

Yes - you will need the capn board also.  The oxilink does pulse/pulse ox/and plyth only.  We used an RS-232 model.  Since RS-232 ports on computers are hard to come by, we used a USB to RS-232 converter.  No extra S/W was required for LV.   BCI provided a good reference guide with all the data words.  I would share the code but it is built into a NDA protected system.

This has been very helpful. We are going to use the oxilink and the capnometry boar. Now I was wondering what would be required so that I can turn this into a portable device. What do I need to purchase in order to transfer my program from LabView as part of a device package including the two boards and sensors?

JakeMitchell86,

Hello! If I understand your question correctly, you are wanting to know how to distribute your application as a product after you've got it up and running?

This can be done using the NI LabVIEW Application builder. Check out:

I am a Biomedical Engineering student working on a similar project, and we have been trying to aquire a BCI Oxilink in order to connect a pulse ox sensor to Lab View. We are stuck because we have been unsuccesful in finding a way to purchase the Oxilink. Were you able to order directly though Smith's or did you go though a distributor? Any help is appreciated.

The thread is three+ years old and the original poster (who had information about the device) has not been on the Forums since.

We ordered our direct from Smiths BCI.  I beleive we had to certify that it was for research pourposes.
