Force Controlled Fatigue Testing

Hi there,

I have a simple enough question, I'm looking to make a program to perform a force controlled fatigue test on small notched test specimens, I have a NI-MID 7604 motor driver and a NI 7330 motion controller, as well as a load cell and linear actuator (the physical setup is ready to go). I know I could make a simple program that would set the motor velocity to a set speed, and then change the motor direction whenever the load cell reads a force outside of the limits of the fatigue test. I believe if I wanted to make this more complicated I could use a PID controller to create a more "smooth" cycle (instead of changing the direction of the motor all at once), but I'm not sure I need that complexity. Another thing I'm curious about is how I'd go about controlling the testing frequency in a force controlled test.

I'm just looking for feedback to make sure there's not a better way to do this, and to make sure I'm not making a dumb mistake.

Thanks for reading.
