EDF Read vi

Hi.

Do you have a vi that reads signals from EDF file (*.rec). I have the EDF writing vi but I need to read the channel info from EDF file.

Can you send me that vi.

I'm not familiar with the EDF file format, but I did a quick Google search on it. Are you referring to the European Data Format for audio files?

If so, there is no VI for reading in these files, but my Google search ("edf file format") did turn up some conversion utilities for changing EDF files into WAV files, which LabVIEW can read using VIs in the Graphics/Sound functions palette. This seems like your best option unless you want to write an algorithm yourself.

Yes I found EDF to wav converter too but that is not exactly what i need. I have an EEG (brain) signal in EDF format. I need Lab View to read that signal.
I found a converter that converted the EDF signal to ASCII and then I read that ascii file with Lab View but I think that it did not convert the signal well enough. I suspect that very many samples have been lost.

Storing a large amount of data in an ASCII file will quickly produce a very large file. LabVIEW 8 can currently only access files up to 4GB in size, I believe. That should still allow for most files, though.

It sounds like the conversion utility isn't that effective. Anyone know of any other utilities?

You could of course read the EDF file as a binary file directly and do the necessary binary operations manually. Anything's possible. You'd need to know intimate details about the binary format. I'm not sure anyone has done this before.

Dear Priit323,

I am also searching for a VI that reads EDF and writes in EDF format. I am doing my thesis project and would be very greatful if you could give me some guidelines. Would it be possible for u to send me the EDF write VI, and what solution did u have for reading the data?

Thankyou very much.
Sincerely,

I just now found this post, and reading an EDF file using LabVIEW would be an amazing help (yes I too am talking about the EEG signals, etc...).  Here is a quick breakdown of the file format for any who are unfamiliar:

Anyways, someone mentioned something about reading it as a binary file, which is EXACTLY what I've been trying to do.  The main problem is the files are 100MB+ so I need to read them in chunks, preferably 6000 values per read which equates to 30 seconds of data in my case, which then need to be graphed.  Anyways, I was wondering if anyone may have come up with their own solution in this case.  Any help or advice would be very much appreciated because right now I feel like I've completely overcomlplicated my problem and am running around in circles.

Regards,
Ryan

Hi,

I'm also trying to deal with EDF file, but on the recording and writing side.  I've been having trouble with saving files in EDF.

I'm wondering if you save them as binary file or spreadsheet.  Also, if it is possible, could you send me the EDF write vi you mentioned before?

Thank you so much.
