I'm not familiar with the EDF file format, but I did a quick Google search on it. Are you referring to the European Data Format for audio files?
If so, there is no VI for reading in these files, but my Google search ("edf file format") did turn up some conversion utilities for changing EDF files into WAV files, which LabVIEW can read using VIs in the Graphics/Sound functions palette. This seems like your best option unless you want to write an algorithm yourself.

Storing a large amount of data in an ASCII file will quickly produce a very large file. LabVIEW 8 can currently only access files up to 4GB in size, I believe. That should still allow for most files, though.
It sounds like the conversion utility isn't that effective. Anyone know of any other utilities?
You could of course read the EDF file as a binary file directly and do the necessary binary operations manually. Anything's possible. You'd need to know intimate details about the binary format. I'm not sure anyone has done this before.
