DataSocket Non-improvement in Labview 8

Greetings all.  It's been a while since I've been on this forum, as my career path has taken be away from Labview for a while, but now I'm back in full force.   Now, for the big question.   Can anyone explain to me why in Labview 8 you can no longer just right click on Data Operations, and create a DataSocket connection?  Now you have to go through this convoluted invocation.   My former colleagues and I used DataSocket TONS back in version 6 and 7, and this is a definite step backwards.  One of them even suggested that this could be a deal breaker in moving up to Labview 8.   Is there any conceivable reason this feature was "improved" into uselessness?

Thank you!

Eric

Is going to Properties>Data Binding that much more convoluted as to be worthless? Personally, the few times I've used datasocket I've prefered doing the connecting on the block diagram but the same functionality seems to be there as before - it's just one extra step and you now have the option of using shared variables.

Hi Dennis....long time no hear.

Perhaps useless was a bit strong, but extremely inconvenient certainly applies when trying to migrate version 6i vi's with literally hundreds of DataSocket ports.  It was so nice to be able to just add a port on any working vi under the old version without even having to go to the block diagram.  It was sort of a jolt to see it missing, as we had built such a huge DataSocket infrastructure over the years.

You don't have to go to the block diagram. As I said, select Properties>Data Binding. This is available on the front panel.
