Beginning XNET troubles

LV2013, PXI 8196, NI-CAN 2.7.5, just installed ni-XNET 1.8 on host.

I'm an old hand at LabVIEW, but brand new to XNET.

Is XNET complete crap, or am I doing something wrong?

I need to take an old program (using NI-CAN on a PXI box) and update it for XNET, to take advantage of newer boards.

Even though using XNET I/O controls is useless for my situation (Really?  'm supposed to stop the RT program and connect from a project in order to configure something on the RT ?), I'm starting there, because I thought that would break me in gently.

The notes say that I should CONNECT from the project to allow the I/O Names to work.

Here's a JING: <http://www.screencast.com/t/PREKutimA5>

0:06, you can see the name selector doesn't work.

0:17 I connect to the box from the project.

0:22 The name selector STILL doesn't work

0:29 I DISconnect and Reconnect.

0:37  Now the I/I name thing works  - why do i have to DISconnect to get it to work?

0:40 I try to MANAGE DATABASE DEPLOYMENT.  I want to try moving a database to the PXI.

0:42 What does the DEPLOY button do?  You would think it would move the database file over to the PXI, and that name would show up in the bottom list. You would be wrong.

0:45 No error, no message, just nothing.  Up yours, you silly human.

0:45  What does UNDEPLOY do? (hint: nothing)  Why is it enabled if there's nothing to undeploy?

0:55 So, maybe it deployed and just didn't show up.... so what happens if I try to SELECT a database?  SURPRISE!

This is 100% repeatable, every time, leading to the crash at the end.

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

Sorry I can't help you with the XNET issue, but maybe instead of Highlighted, they meant "Bolded".

Which would be the line: "You must now use a "label" ..."

Well, there was already a label in the slot, so that's not it.  It turned out to be the TAGS.

I had to put in a TAG to get it to post, but it posted twice.

So, I reinstalled XNET 1.8 on the PXI box and now it seems happier.

The DEPLOY option works, and it shows a couple of examples that were there already.

Don't know why it was so dumb about it, though.

Now, it requires me to connect an INTERFACE name, but won't show anything in the menu.

Create a constant, the FILTERING is set ALL, but click on it, and I get no menu.

My board (PXI-8461) is there and working, but it just refuses to do anything.

Maybe the old board doesn't work with XNET...

Definite YES on that, this card only supports NI-CAN. (see http://sine.ni.com/psp/app/doc/p/id/psp-337/ )

OK, the COMPATIBILITY page shows me that XNET and this old board are NOT compatible.

it won't let me SELECT anything, and if i type in "CAN1" or "CAN2" or "CAN0" it complains that I have to select an existing interface.  So, the new software (XNET) doesn't recognize the old board.

So, I'll have to use the old software for the old board and XNET only for the new ones.
