Adios

I am done with this forum.

I have received one too many unjustified low rating. I have stated time and time again that if you want to give a poor rating, then do so with an explanation. It does this forum no good for someone to slap a 1 star rating on an answer, and not say why. I have already asked NI to removed this rating system from their software, or to at least remove anonymity from them. The software is not in their hands, so doing so is rather difficult.

I give a great deal of my time to help people on this forum, and get nothing in return (except for having my moniker on the bottom of the page, big deal.) So to me, there is little motivation to continue to participate in this forum, and help people out, if I am going to be treated this way.

For those who I have been helping, if you still need my assistance, you have my email address. I am also involved in another, more popular, and non-anonymous forum.

Hi, sorry about how your helps have been rated.

And, to those who were/ are posting your question(s) here, please do your part to rate with comment(s) should you rated the anwers. Else, please leave it without rating it at all. That's better!

Sorry if I am too harsh on this as I might be next who will receive such treat. We are people who are here to try to help, yes, sometime our answer/ solution might not suits your expectation/ solve your problem. But, please bear in mind that we spent our time and effort on answering your question(s).

I am of the opinion that participation in this forum is voluntary and it is to help others without seeking any form of gratification. That been the case, my advice is that you don't focus too much on the rating system, a low rating doesn't take anthing away from your skill/knowledge. Even when you have an explanation for a low rating what would you do with that?

You should be proud of what you have contributed to this forum. Please don't quit!

Especially as I suspect most "serious" users don't bother using the website
and just point their preferred newsreader at NI's server. So I never see the
rating system.

Not that I say much about Labview at the moment, being more into VB and
Measurement Studio for this project.

Gee Mike - take it easy! If people want to give you a rating (high or low), that's their business. I figured that taking on such a grand user name you wouldn't be rattled by a few low ratings (I notice that your average rating is 3/4 - not bad!) Just because your user name suggests it, I think that you should be humble enough to accept that not everyone is going to agree with what you say, and that someone else may have a better answer.

Personally, I couldn't give a toss about the rating system on my own answers - if my answer to a question is not as good as someone else's, I think it's useful for someone (preferably who knows what they are talking about 🙂 ) to give me a low rating and the other person's a high one.

As for the anonymity - I think it's a good thing, otherwise someone who might justifiably give you a low rating might be to scared to, lest you fill their inbox with whinging.

I agree with the other folks on one point - you have been very useful to this online community (and Info-LabVIEW as well), so we don't want to loose you. I just think you should ignore the ratings, forget about your personal image, and get back to what we're all here for - helping each other. I totally disagree about your comment about "...get[ting] nothing in return..." - it seems that all of your questions to the zone have been answered, and you've got a high rating! I don't know about you, but I'm not here for some "he's must be a legend because he's an enthusiast, got a top star-rating" ranting - I'm here to help people, and hopefully for them to help me too.

PS: I don't understand the "...more popular... forum" comment - if you're going to run this forum into the ground like that just because you have received a few ratings on your posts that you don't agree with, then at least please qualify your statement - are there more registered users on the other forum? Is it because there are more questions or answers posted daily? What makes it so good that you're not even going to bother with this one anymore? If you are talking about Info-LabVIEW, they are both very good forums - completely different, but equally important.

LG;

I don't know of a rating system that is fair.

I personally don't believe in this rating system. It is nice to see that your answer received a good rating, and the opposite is also true (not nice... bad rating). However, you still have no idea if your answer was appropriate or not unless the originator of the question reply saying that yes, it was helpful, or no, not what I was asking for. Otherwise there is no way to know who gave you a rating and, more importantly, why.

If NI still want to rate answers, they should do something like "if this answer was useful, click here", and that's it! Meaning that, if the answer was not useful, do nothing. For anything else, reply the answer. The most important thing is that we all want to learn.

Sorry to see you go. I have learned much from many of your answers
even when they were not a result of any question posed by me.

I didn't know this usenet group even had a rating system. That strikes
me as a bit odd frankly. Apparently I'm unaware of the extent this
group appears to be monitor or in what fashion that is acheived.

Mike,

My advice would be to lighten up a little and ignore the ratings. I have gotten low ratings on some answers and I've chosen to just ignore them. If you use a regular news reader, you won't even see them.

If you do decide to leave, I'm sorry to hear it. You are definitely the most useful person on this discussion forum. But I really wouldn't worry about the rating system. That's just people, and they sometimes don't even know much about the answers anyway. I would hope you will stay, as you give so much to this group. Thanks for all the help you've given.
