100 Pin Connector, Backshell, and Cable

NI recommends the 749621-9 "D-100" IDC connector and 749081-1 backshell for assembling custom cables. I am looking for recommendations for an appropriate cable to mate to these parts. The backshell does not seem suitable for typical flat cable; it has an oblong hole for a jacketed cable.
Is there another backshell specifically for flat IDC cable that is more suitable?
Also, is there a flat IDC cable that transitions to round jacketed cable that will work with the 749081-1 backshell?

Well, believe it or don't, the ribbon cable does fit through the oblong hole, if your roll it. I know it looks lame, but we've always had a forest of these things buried in racks. 🙂 I'm sure there's a "proper" adaptor, somewhere, but I'm also sure it's not cheap. Check with the NI accessories in the catalog.

Hi Eric,
Thanks for the info. I tried rolling it, and noted that it introduces cable strain as the cable flares out from the center - especially with two 50 conductor cables squeezed into the backshsell. I also tried rolling it without the connector attached, and cut the cable end to make it straight, reducing strain. I figured there must be a better way. I'm sure some people make custom SCSI-type cables. Maybe someone will weigh in on that.

I've bought ribbon cable which is rolled up and wrapped in a shielded round cable from Newark. However, they do not offer it with 100 conductors. I guess you could always use two bundles of 50?

I am not familiar with the IDC connector from NI though. The cable above is 0.050", which may or may not be compatible.

Thanks John, this is a very interesting prospect. The 0.050" pitch is the same as the IDC connector recommended by NI. I'll have to find out if it is, in fact, Insulation Displacement Cable. It is not explicitly stated in the description. And yes, I would have to use two cables of 50 conductors each; the IDC connector is two rows.

I have purchased and used this cable through Newark Electronics, and can confirm that it is insulation displacment cable.
