implementing HART protocol for smart transmitters

i'm writing a program for communicating with smart pressure transmitter using HART protocol. i started with labview 6i and was successful in writing to the transmitter. but when i tried to read from the transmitter using VISA read, i get a error message saying timeout expired before operation completed

plz do suggest some ideas to rectify this problem.

I have an old not so good implementation of the hart protocol that I thought I needed today but my customer was satisfied with the analog output on his controller. If you want I can sent it to you but it is based on the old serial library so you could have problems in newer labview versions

Here it is. Please test it because I really changed a lot.
I don't like HEX strings and translating from bytes to strings and back again, so I removed all crazy conversions.
I also have some pdf files but did not include or read them.

How can I find the device ID or the tag ID of the MFC without the software you mentionned?

Also do you know if there is a public available command set for the 0154 readout unit?

    This will be very useful for me as well.  Thanks for spending the time to write all this.  It is unfortunate that Brooks makes this good digital mfc's however they make them so difficult to use.  In my experience digital products from other vendors are very easy to deal with and come with their drivers.

Two questions:

1)  You used the "Smart DDE" program to find the "Device ID"?
2) any advice on how to use your program if I am using multiple instruments daisy chained with the RS485 connection?
