Serial port read gives Error -1073807298 most of the time

I have a device here taht just randomly spitsout a status string on a serial port.

I just need to simply capture this string and save it to a file

No matter what I try I can sometimes get one or two good reads but I always get this error.  

Error -1073807298 occurred at VISA Read

VISA:  (Hex 0xBFFF003E) Could not perform operation because of I/O error.

I searched and found a million hits on this error but no real soultions.

I have even tried the LV 8.5 example programs

Error -1073807298 occurred at VISA Read in Advanced Serial Write and Read.vi

Possible reason(s):

VISA:  (Hex 0xBFFF003E) Could not perform operation because of I/O error.

What does this mean? How do I fix it?

I have a couple of suggestions for you:
1.  Can you communicate with the device in MAX(Measurement & Automation Explorer) using the VISA test panels?

2.  Are you sending the correct commands to the device?

3.  What hardware/devices are you trying to communicate with and how (GPIB, Serial, etc...)?

4.  Can you please post a screenshot of your code?

5.  Can you also please include an NI-Spy Capture?
