Since you got the explanation that it is an invalid resource, did you verify that Com1 is present in your system? You can see all of the serial resources present by running MAX (Measurement & Automation Explorer). Also, if yu click on the little down arrow on the right side the of the VISA Resource Name Control, you will get a list of all available resources.

Built in ports should appear automatically. If you are using a USB-RS232 converter, then there should be a driver disk that you need to install. If it is a USB-RS232, what's the make and model? Does it appear in the windows device manager as a com port? Can you use Hyperterminal with it?

What is the UT60A? The only reference I could find to that is a DMM and while you may be using that instrument, it doesn't matter and you haven't answered my questions.

If you are using a USB-RS232 converter, then the instrument you have connected is absolutely irrelevant. You haven't answered the most important questions. Do you actually have a USB-RS232 converter and if you do, what is the make and model of that? Every USB-RS232 converter needs a driver disk from the vendor in order to make it appear as a com port in windows. If you did not get one, you need to get it from the vendor and install the driver.

If the instrument itself has a USB port, then you still need a driver from the vendor. Whether the driver will make the USB connection appear as a com port is up to the vendor.

Please explain fully how you actually are connecting to the pc. USB-RS232 converter, direct to USB on the meter, built-in RS232 port of the pc. Once you provide the correct information, you can receive some help.
