RS232 Control Problems

Ocean optics has a labview driver itself.
It is baswd on dll calls and a bit old. Once it works it is ok. but if you use the OObase software and the LabVIEW software
Sometimes the LabVIEW software stops recognizing the usb connected spectrometer.
(especially when your customer reinstalls the oobase software).

I made a small improvement  but I'm not satisfied, yet.
One of the problems is that the LabVIEW driver has to be bought so I can not publish my modifications without the original software.

But if you need examples I can provide my interface.

There's nothing wrong with OO spectrometers, they (the Comnpany) just isn't big into LabVIEW (in fact, the President told me in person that he "doesn't like LabVIEW"). The newer spectrometers are also not as RS232 friendly - they want to push USB -- not that that's a horrible thing, it's just this thread was regarding RS232.

I was told by one of the head engineer/tech guys at Cecil that I should not use LabVIEW because of its inability to perform well with the spectrophotometer I have.  It came with a nice little DataStream program, but it doesn't store or display data very well.
Sigh Smiley Indifferent, you know its never good to start a project with something when you are strongly recommended not to.

When a company says something like "LabVIEW will not work well with... blah blah blah" it usually means they don't support LabVIEW, nor have a LabVIEW person on hand. These same companies (I know for a fact) will tell you in one sentence that LabVIEW isn't so good, but Visual Basic is great. Uh huh. Whatever. Smiley Tongue

It's even funnier when a company sends you a manual titled "Remote Control Manual for Series #### Spectrophotometers" and then two days later says that it is a very bad manual, poorly written, and doesn't contain all of the ascii remote commands...

Why release a manual that, in simple terms, "sucks"?

But for sure there are much drivers around that are even worse than the LabVIEW driver from Ocean Optics.
I handled two serial drivers based on serpdrv that were so unreadble that I only checked some of the commands to the written paper and wrote a new driver from scratch.
