I did look at the firmware release notes when I first started having issues. I didn't see anything that applied to my issue, so I didn't update (I'm at 3.0). I suppose I should try an update, just in case there's an 'undocumented fix' - it's just a pain because there are 6 devices that need updating.
This is a really weird problem, because on Friday, the system was working even though the *ESE 48 was being issued. I repeatedly ran the VI without problems then, so I'm not 100% sure this won't crop up again. FYI, I tried doing the error query right after that line that has the ESE query, and it still failed with the 48, but worked with the 32. The worst thing about the problem was I lost complete access to the device, and had to power cycle it. NI could no longer find it after the error occured.

I updated the firmware to latest (3.02) and still exhibits the same problem. Will have to leave ESE at 32 until some other problem comes along 😉
