LabView and HPIB

Hi folks,

I was wondering if anyone has had experience of running HPIB cards under
LabView, specifically I have been issued a copy of LabView 5.1.1 and a
HP 82350A PCI HPIB card and have been asked to get them to run a couple
of HP units. It seems to run without problems using HPVEE but my
supervisor wants LabView. I pretty new at the whole LabView thing, and
so don't know where to start!

Any help would be appreciated.

Donald,
Bit of a problem since Labview is from National Instruments who
also happens to make GPIB cards. Are you having trouble starting
with labview or is it getting labview to work with the GPIB card?

You can try a few things if it is the 2nd part.
Tr
y the T&M explorer and see if it will recognize the GPIB device.
I thought I heard that the latest version of NI-VISA worked with HP cards
but I can not verify.
Try unintalling NI-488.2 and / or NI-VISA (may have to reinstall the
HP drivers)

You may have trouble getting help from either vendor since they have
competing products.
You may want to redirect the question to comp.language.labview if you have
not already done so.

I'm not sure that we own exactly this model of card, but our solution to using
HP-IB with our oscilloscope is to buy NI GPIB card (like PCI-GPIB)...

If your HP-IB card comes with VISA library, install it.

HP (Agilent) VISA and NI VISA are NOT interchangeble, compatible.

So much for VXIplug&play!

You can save yourself a lot of time and trouble by getting a NI GPIB card.
I do NOT work for NI!
It's just that HPIB VISA drivers are NOT compatible with NI VISA.
Unless you have some other reason (HPVee) to stay with HPIB, you'll be WAY
ahead paying the $500 or so and getting a NI GPIB.

just my 2 cents, and worth every penny!

Donald/Rab, Mike, et al:

It is true that you can have only one VISA on a system. However, with
NI-VISA 2.5, you can use NI-VISA to access Agilent/HP controllers (such as
HPIB) as well as NI controllers (such as PCI-GPIB).

If all you have is the HP card, your 2 choices are:
1) Uninstall NI-VISA, and install Agilent/HP VISA. Use the VISA icons in
LabVIEW and it will work.
2) Install Agilent/HP SICL but not their VISA. Install NI-VISA 2.5
(currently in beta) and see the readme.txt.

Good luck with LabVIEW and your GPIB system! If you choose option #2, let
me know if you have any problems.
