GPIB-USB-HS causes XP PC to freeze at boot

Hello,

I'm the Sys/Network admin here, so I have no experience with the NI solutions specifically. However, I'm setting up a PC for one of our labs. The PC is running XP Pro SP3, and includes an NI PCI-6281 and NI GPIB-USB-HS, both of which connects to some of our proprietary hardware.

When we turn the PC on, it hangs during the boot process (it's a Dell, and the PC hangs at the Dell splash page, before even the Windows logo appears). The PC will totally freeze, requiring it to be powered down.

However, if I unplug the USB cable from the GPIB-USB-HS, the PC boots normally. I can then plug in the USB cable, and there are no problems.

I know that the attached hardware is fine, because we've tested the hardware with a different PC.

Can anyone point me in the right direction here? The GPIB-USB-HS shipped with NI-488.2.

Thanks.

Paul

Hello Paul,

Does this behavior occur when the GPIB-USB-HS is connected to other computers, or is it specific to this system?  From what you describe this is not a driver issue, it is a BIOS/hardware issue.  One thing you could check would be if the system BIOS is looking at the USB port as a possible boot location.  Another option would be to just not have the device plugged in during boot up.

Let me know if you find any BIOS settings that could be causing this problem.

Dan King

Hi Dan,

I should've added to my original post that I'd already checked the BIOS, and the boot order looks for the SATA hard drive first.

I haven't checked what happens if the GPIB-USB-HS is connected to another computer, as this is the only computer in that lab. I can, however, try it with a different PC and get back to you.

Thanks,

Paul
