Are you sure the instrument should respond to a *IDN?
Does it say it does in the manual?

Ameer,
It seems you are a beginner with GPIB instruments. Not all instruments will respond to the *IDN? query. You failed to mention the make and model and that is vital information. Look in the programming manual to see whether *IDN? is listed. If it is not, then simply ignore the warning. If it is listed, then you can start to worry.

Just one addtion: there are even some instruments ( like the agilent 603x powersupplies) which support two different sets of command languages. One set supports the*IDN? query but the other set not.

If the product specification of your instrument says IEEE488.2-compliant (and optionally SCPI language compliant), the instrument must respond to an *IDN? query. Otherwise it may or may not understand the *IDN? query.

In my instrument manual nowhere is written about *IDN? query and anything related to it.
