Controlling multiple GPIB devices from two PCs

We currently have an application that uses a single PC GPIB card to control a pair of sig gens.

The need has arisen for a second PC to be placed in the loop so that each can control the sig gens when required.

Each PC would take turns controlling the sig gens. 

I have read about multiple GPIB cards from a single PC working but does anyone know if the multiple PC method is workable?

Is it just a case of setting up the PC GPIB card addresses in MAX?

Reading more it looks like I'm headed down a blind alley here - I can rearrange our system so it will not be necessary to do this
